Abstract
Engineering solution nowadays requires contribution from various fields and there has been an increase in the requirement for interdisciplinary solution. However, students from each field have a tendency to feel comfortable in their own area and unwilling to venture out of their comfort zone. Hence, this paper focuses on developing a method to create an environment that encourages interdisciplinary learning. Modular-based teaching approach might not be ideal for interdisciplinary learning, but is often used due to several benefits like students being able to take modules at different time, better definition of learning objectives and resource planning. Thus, this paper decides to explore designing a method that can achieve interdisciplinary learning without affecting the current modular (or subject-based) teaching. With the advancement of technology in internet and mobile communication technology capability, this paper proposes utilizing the abundant availability of communication devices like computers and tablets. E-learning is proposed to be the platform because each student can attend the lesson at their own timing and will not affect current lesson plans. On top of that, this paper proposes using revision as the mode to achieve interdisciplinary learning, with the ideal aim of the students achieving this outcome with little effort and ideally unknowingly. The students have to do the revision in preparation for the examination. Hence, it is proposed to utilize what the students will already be doing so that they do not feel that extra effort has to be put in just for interdisciplinary learning. "A" level students (similar to high school) are used in this study and Physics and Mathematics are used for the experiment. The study results demonstrate very positive results, with a significant shift in the capability of answer interdisciplinary questions that are not covered in their regular classes. The students also feedback the easiness of the e-learning course, illustrating the little effort put in.
