Every sport has its unique movement, for example, shooting in basketball, smashing in tennis and badminton, etc. The techniques used in executing these motions are different for various kinds of sports although they might share the same namesake. In order to master a sport, one must know and be able to execute most, if not all the techniques for that sport. In this paper, we focus on the smashing technique in badminton. To execute a proper smashing, proper timing and the right technique in smashing are crucial. Conventional method of learning a sport technique is coaching by an experienced player or coach. However, a beginner might find it hard to understand and learn all the necessary rotation, twisting and translation for upper limb for making a proper smashing in badminton. Typical training sessions for a beginner would involve watching numerous demonstrations, constant one-on-one coach-to-trainee guidance and corrections, and persistent practices. Imparting of the skills would therefore involve laborious personal coaching and guidance and endless practices under supervision. It is therefore almost impossible to impart to a beginner by demonstrations and guidance. This paper presents the novel method for coaching a beginner to execute a proper smashing action in badminton. Smashing actions of experienced players is recorded by a motion capture system. Analysis is carried out to translate the captured motion as recognizable input to the exoskeleton. An innovative idea for a device to train and guide the movement of amateur player is discussed in this paper. It aims to reduce the mistake of amateur player in smashing by restraining and/or guiding the motion of the player. The possibility of mapping the motion of experienced player into robot executable movement is discussed in this paper. A novel method to impart sports technique to beginner is explored. The method will greatly reduce the time required to train a player and increase the efficiency of training.
