Structural design using simulation-based reliability assessment

Dramatic development of computer technology allows for consideration the transition from "Partial Factors Method" to structural reliability assessment concept based on fully probabilistic approach. A probabilistic concept SBRA based on Limit States philosophy, Monte Carlo simulation technique and parameters generated histograms has been developed over the last fifteen years and documented in a textbook [1]. The paper explains the limitations of the Partial Factors Design concept, such as applied in codes [2] and [3], and outlines the fundamentals of the proposed Simulation-based Reliability Assessment method, SBRA, leading to a balanced reliability level and corresponding material savings. The engineering profession needs new approaches in order to provide the best possible service to society corresponding to the computer and information technology era. Reengineering of the reliability assessment process and tools such as simulation techniques, powerful computers and databases will contribute to reaching such goals. Some European specifications already recognize a probabilistic approach and allow for using Monte Carlo simulation in structural steel design.
