Abstract
My thesis project touches base on 3 key issues that seek to assess and reflect on the times that we live in [Climate] Crisis. The world is plunging into a state of crisis, yet people do not seem to take these concerns seriously. Sea level rise are about to put millions of people without land, yet we carry on as if this will not happen. Poldering. (the diking and draining of coasts) has been argued as a stop-gap measure to rising sea levels, but is it truly a long-lasting solution? Capitalism. On a bigger picture, we have to evaluate capitalism’s negative implications on climate change and global warming and think about the post-capitalist model. This project reimagines a future of living on water whereby infrastructure and life is centred around a renewable material known as biorock, and natural sedimentation replaces the unsustainable practice of land reclamation. The methodology is derived from Landscape Urbanism and Form Axioms, using strategies such as Indexing, Prototyping and Meshing. The utilisation of the Ocean as the site provides a tebula rasa, in which design is not heavily pegged on any particular societal context or human bureaucracy. This leeway provides the possibilities of fictions to be generated, to envision man-made techno-derived society, and also to construct architecture not as a static realm, but as a series of ongoing phases.
