Abstract
What is Cinema? This thesis explores cinema and film, particularly its methods and techniques of crafting a scene into designing architecture. Film is a perfect act of architecture, through the way it is able to set up curated scenes of reality. By studying precisely what these methods are and how they can be used in architecture, one is able to understand how real life narratives can be crafted through spaces and through how one experiences it. After understanding these methods of filmmaking, we then turn to applying such techniques into the crafting of a Kabuki play: a traditional Japanese performance art that has been around for centuries. By juxtapositioning these two forms of reality, we seek to reinterpret the idea of the Kabuki theatre as a cinematic form through redesigning its format and the space it occupies in. The new kabuki theatre will be situated in a redesigned park in Tokyo, Japan, applying the same methods of the cinema.
