Abstract
Despite efforts in curbing climate change, little progress was seen in reducing global warming. While the world moves away from hydrocarbon and burning of fossil fuel as primary means of energy, more is needed to remove carbon dioxide that is already in the air, in order to achieve negative-zero emission. Negative emission technologies, such as Direct Air Capture, have the potential to complement existing efforts. However existing Direct Air Capture technologies are not feasible for urban areas, due to economic and technical reasons. The global population is projected to increase to 10 billion by 2050. With 70% of people living in cities, the rate of urbanization will continue to increase carbon dioxide emissions further. This thesis seeks to explore the potential of small scale Distributed Direct Air Capture as an alternative paradigm for urban areas, specifically the built environment, as the sector accounts for one of the largest contributions of carbon emissions.
