Abstract
My thesis explores a new form of ecological construction in that building components are planted, grown, and harvested. Grafting is explored as the primary method for constructing buildings with living trees. Referencing Baubotanik, an ongoing research on living plant construction at the Technical University Munich led by Prof Ferdinand Ludwig, grafting can be used to merge many trees into one single organism that is load-bearing, durable and suitable for architecture. My thesis explores this new method of construction further and applies it in the context of the Tropics, where trees grow much faster due to the abundant sunlight and warm temperatures throughout the year. My thesis work includes research on the principles of living tree construction, specifically on the nature and growth patterns of Ficus Elastica, a tropical tree that I chose for its unique properties as the primary material for my investigation. My thesis project proposes three key building components: (1) a column system, (2) a facade system and (3) a floor system. These three systems demonstrate the great potential of living tree construction for future architecture, from planting and growing to harvesting and living.
