Abstract
As of 2014, more than half the world’s population resides in cities. This proportion is set to increase to 66% by 2050¹. The population density of cities is expected to increase, and a denser built housing typology is hence required to accommodate the influx of inhabitants within the limited land area of cities. The high rise built is the conventional coping mechanism for population growth. They are simple systems of repetitive floor plates that can be multiplied indefinitely when more floor area is required. However, the high rise typology is not without its drawbacks. High rise built tend to result in a loss of community spirit, a standardized unit typology that may not be suited or everyone, and can be extremely disconnected from nature. When not addressed, these issue can significantly affect the quality of living. To strive for higher standards of living, the low rise typology should once again be embraced and adapted to accommodate the increase in population. The low rise high density housing typology is envisioned to be an environment where there is heightened social coherence, increase access to the outdoor environment and an increased sense of ownership of space. This thesis aims to uncover the principles that would allow for the creation of a low rise high density typology. The main challenges to be addressed are: 1. Optimizing housing units to function better while working with higher space constrains. 2. Fostering a sense of community between residences on multiple levels ranging from a small cluster of people to the larger collective neighborhood. 3. Create a cohesive urban housing environment with increase vibrancy and intensity as a result of programming & intensification.
