Abstract
Climate change is on the brink of irreversibility and its impacts to human life is inevitable. With the continual population growth, this problem is exacerbated and international efforts and measures taken against this issue only slows down the warming process without actually stopping it. With advancements in technology, carbon removal is made possible through ‘negative emission technology’. This new emerging technology brings confidence in putting a halt to global warming, or even cooling it. This thesis project speculates the development of an emergent type of infrastructure with integrated “negative emissions” technology. The infrastructure would demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to the changing environments, integrating, reacting and forging interdependent relationships with the environment. The negative emission infrastructure takes on a new perspective for waste treatment infrastructure as it cuts through the center of the city rather than being isolated in the hinterland of the country. In this way, the system of negative carbon emission will not be in the form of a onedimensional infrastructure, but instead a coherent integration of social, infrastructure and ecology.
