Abstract
Singapore boasts itself to be a shopping paradise for all ages. Coined by the Singapore Tourism Board, it claims that “...shopping doesn’t get any better than here in the shopping paradise that is Singapore”. Yet in 2016, statistics have shown that existing shopping centres have reached an all time high vacancy rate. At the same time, new retail developments built using the similar paradigm, are also in progress. Along with the rise of e-commerce and a change in shopping preferences, many have come to pronounce the death of shopping malls in Singapore. In such cases, older shopping centres, especially those built in 1970-1990, would most likely be abandoned first, simply due to its age as well as a niche market. This thesis aims to look into these older shopping centres and re-imagine a new paradigm for retail developments that would further enhance the shopping centres,in turn extending the lifespan of these buildings.
