Abstract
Most Robotic Command and Control (RC2) systems interface today are implemented on a desktop environment using a conventional PC set up. With the rapid advancement in VR/AR technology, we see the potential in replacing that setup with an immersive VR interface. To study the effects of using VR on user’s performance, we conducted a literature review and experiment to study the effect of VR on user’s situation awareness in the context of single operator RC2 system. We designed and developed a game to emulate a typical RC2 scenario and we logged participant’s performance data. Results from in-game data and questionnaire have proven benefits of VR in enhancing situation awareness. We hope that this research can help lay the foundation for future VR interfaced RC2 system, in the field of remote Human-Robot-Interaction (HRI).
