Abstract
This thesis project aims to explore the intersection of urban air mobility (UAM) and architecture as a response to the increasing need for mobility in cities. UAM provides numerous advantages as compared to existing conventional modes of transport, such as time savings, low infrastructure requirements and greater ease of movement. UAM will take advantage of the revolutionary technology of drones in order to deliver mobility. This project, will examine scope of UAM in terms of passenger drone transportation. Architecture will have to respond to the growing new technological revolutions - drones. The project will focus on producing a new building typology which will serve as a urban air traffic transit station for people. Future UAM infrastructure will serve as the urban airports of the future, transporting the masses within cities. This building could then be replicated like nodes in an urban network. The study would serve an important step in providing material form and the necessary infrastructure in order to support the vision of UAM. The project will stem from the current urban typology of vertical, skyscraper helipads. The envelope of the building will also be carefully studied as an interface between aircraft and architecture. The building will attempt to reflect the dynamism of mobility activities, and in doing so, facilitate efficient UAM operations, whilst also generating unique spatial qualities.
