Full-duplex (FD) transmission has great potential to improve the transmission rate of the relay channel. To alleviate the effect of self-interference at the FD relay, we propose a novel hybrid-duplex (HyD) scheme based on compress-forward (CF) protocol, where the relay operates in receive-only, FD and transmit-only modes consecutively. The signalling, encoding and decoding procedures are characterized clearly based on Wyner-Ziv coding with side information. The transmission rate achieved by the proposed HyD scheme is derived in closed-form. Two variants of the proposed HyD scheme are also elaborated, which are demonstrated to achieve transmission rates no less than that of pure FD and half-duplex CF schemes. Numerical results show that the proposed HyD scheme and the two variants outperform existing benchmark schemes for most cases and provide an achievable rate gain up to 10.16% for some cases.
